It’s not often you’d hear comparison to a Manchester United player as praise coming from a lifelong Liverpool man. However, when Steven Gerrard had to think of a way to describe his successor Jordan Henderson’s on-pitch contributions, one name came to him: Manchester United’s Paul Scholes.

“I think over the years he has developed parts of his game, his passing range is fantastic and he’s running games with control a bit like Paul Scholes used to do it. He’s leading by example and he is always there for the team,” Gerrard said.

Henderson is a serious contender for the PFA Player of the Year award after leading the Reds to a commanding 25 point lead in the Premier League. His performances have made him invaluable in Klopp’s midfield, and even the most virulent anti-Henderson people have been forced to come around on him.

“It’s no surprise to me how he is handling himself on and off the pitch, obviously I played with him for numerous years for Liverpool and England,” Gerrard said.

“Very fit, athletic boy who is very selfless in how he approaches his play on the pitch. He puts everyone else before himself and when you play alongside him you appreciate the job he does for the team.”

As the COVID-19 pandemic rages, Liverpool fans still live in hope that Henderson will get to raise the Premier League trophy at the end of it all, in recognition of his incredible achievements this season.
