When Liverpool kickoff against Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday, it will be the 100th time Alisson Becker has taken the pitch as Liverpool’s goalkeeper. The Brazilian has been the first name on the teamsheet, both figuratively and literally, since he arrived in 2018.
After years of headaches and questionable performances from their keepers, Liverpool finally went all-in on a world class shot stopper in the summer of 2018 when they bought Alisson from Roma for £66.8 million, which was a world record fee for a keeper (though only very briefly) at the time.
Alisson was the very clear number one for the Reds from the instant he was bought and his impact was immediate. Though Virgil van Dijk’s arrival earlier in the year went a long way toward solving Liverpool’s defensive woes, Allison’s presence made scoring against them a near Herculean feat.
Since he has arrived at Liverpool, Alisson has earned numerous team and individual honors. Though they are too many to list in their entirety, here are a few highlights:
- 2018-19 Champion’s League Champion
- 2019-20 Premier League Champion
- 2018-19 Premier League Golden Glove winner
- Inaugural Yashin Trophy winner for world’s best goalkeeper in 2019
- 2018-19 Champion’s League Squad of the Season and Goalkeeper of the Season
- 2019 UEFA Team of the Year
Jürgen Klopp was asked about Alisson reaching the century mark during his press conference ahead of the Brighton clash, and to say his praise of the Brazilian was glowing would be an understatement.
“After 100 games for Liverpool I don’t have to speak about the importance of Ali,” Klopp said. “I think he’s had 99 good ones so far, I can’t think of one where he hasn’t been spot on. I’m very happy with him.”
Cheers to your first 100 matches with Liverpool, Alisson. Hopefully there will be a few hundred more!
