Liverpool will receive an injury boost this week with Fabinho and Xherdan Shaqiri both expected to take part in full training with their teammates in the coming days, meaning both could be in line to face Tottenham on the weekend.
Even if they’re fit but not fully match fit by the time Liverpool kick off against Spurs in Saturday’s late game, it’s a much needed boost for a side that has been hit by injuries in recent weeks and finds themselves short in midfield.
Losing James Milner was the latest blow there, and the extent of the veteran’s hamstring injury remains unreported. Naby Keïta is also missing, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain just made his return off the bench against Everton in the FA Cup.
It all means that Fabinho’s return in particular is coming at a fortuitous time for Jürgen Klopp’s pace setting Reds, as even if he’s not ready for Tottenham he should be in line to start when Liverpool face Manchester United a week later.
In the meantime, Jordan Henderson and Gini Wijnaldum appear locks to start on the weekend against Spurs, with midfield likely rounded out by one of Oxlade-Chamberlain or Adam Lallana if Fabinho isn’t ready to go.
For Shaqiri, the need to rush him back into the lineup seems less urgent, but with the player finding his form before his latest setback and having been laid off for less time than Fabinho, he might be the more ready of the two to play.
