There are always plenty of rumours flying around in the middle of the season, but today’s feels a bit like we’re digging through the annals of yore. The Reds have been linked with James Maddison since 1776 (I couldn’t resist, and if you could, you should be ashamed of yourself) when Paul Joyce mentioned his name and everyone got very excited. Maddison has moved from Coventry to Norwich City and now to Leicester City since then, but apparently the Reds are still interested and per the pundits, should swoop in and make Maddison at Anfield a reality.
Noel Whelan believes that, despite interest from several other clubs, Maddison would work incredibly well under Klopp.
“James Maddison is absolutely a Liverpool type of player, I can see him joining,” Whelan said to Football Insider . “He can be the new Coutinho. He’s similar to him in many ways – great feet, can run with the ball, can see a pass that no-one else can and scores wonder goals.
“He’s still young but already he’s a real gem and his value is going to get higher and higher over the next few years.”
Hopefully that’s where the similarities end, etc., etc.
“Can Liverpool sign him in January? Of course. They got [Virgil] Van Dijk in a January window and haven’t looked back,” Whelan added. “Liverpool will also have money to spend after not buying anyone senior this summer.
“Jurgen Klopp and the recruitment team have a brilliant record in the transfer market, and Maddison could fit in well.”
It’s definitely likely that Liverpool have been following Maddison’s career and have been waiting for the right moment to swoop in, but it’s equally likely that this is one pundit getting carried away. It’s probably not worth holding our breaths for this one.
