The good news is that Naby Keïta has been passed fit and will be available to face MK Dons in the League Cup on Wednesday evening. The bad news is that Xherdan Shaqiri won’t be, with the Swiss international having picked up a knock in training.

It’s a major blow for Shaqiri, who has seen his chances limited to start the 2019-20 season and will have been hoping to take the chance to make an impression as part of a heavily changed side in England’s second cup competition this week.

“Yesterday towards the end of training, Shaq felt his calf stiffen up a little bit,” Pepijn Lijnders said. “He couldn’t continue and a scan showed he had a little tear. We need to wait a couple of days, but for sure he is not in contention for tomorrow.”

Meanwhile, Lijnders, who is taking charge of media and team preparation for MK Dons with Jürgen Klopp off at FIFA’s The Best awards, confirmed that Sadio Mané won’t be involved on Wednesday but is expected back in training on Thursday.

“Sadio has a knock, of course, but he looks good,” Liverpool’s assistant manager added. “With having today off and having treatment tomorrow, I think on Thursday he will be back in training again, so that looks all good.”

Divock Origi also won’t be an option, though he is close to a return to training with his teammates. In his place, Rhian Brewster is expected to be given the chance to lead the line in tomorrow’s cup tie.
