Liverpool is heading into the international break at the top of the Premier League and it’s time for at least a week and a half of commenting and opining on the state of the league while we wait for mostly inconsequential games to end (who cares about the Euros when our forward three aren’t going to appear in them anyway?).
Former Liverpool defender and current commentator Jamie Carragher is going into this break with a lot of opinions on current Liverpool defensive midfielder, Fabinho.
“I actually think he’s the best in the Premier League now in that position,” Carragher said after Liverpool 3-0 win against the worst team in the Premier League this weekend. When asked about last year’s best defensive midfielder, Carragher was firmly of the belief that Fabinho has surpassed him.
”Fernandinho looks like he’s fading out of the City team and Rodri is just coming in but I think since Christmas when he came in [to the team] you could argue he was Liverpool’s best player last season.
”Right now I think he’s the best in that position. I think Liverpool paid between £40-50m, it was a few quid, he had a difficult start but that’s where Liverpool have improved this season.
“If you think of the start of last season how well they were playing but they didn’t have Fabinho.”
Fabinho joined Liverpool from Monaco last summer in a £43.7m deal, and took a while to find his place in Klopp’s midfield. This season has shown just valuable he’s become to the team and he has rightly become a monumental part of Liverpool’s winning midfield this season.
Fabinho will feature in Brazil’s friendlies against Colombia and Peru on September 6 and 10 and will hopefully make it back to Liverpool with no injuries.
