Losing on penalties to Manchester City is no way to start a season, even if the Community Shield isn’t exactly the most sought after trophy in football. But luckily for Liverpool, they have another largely unimportant trophy to try for on Wednesday, when they head to Istanbul to take on Chelsea in the UEFA Super Cup.

Joe Gomez wants to get his hands on that silverware after being denied the opportunity at Wembley last week.

“I think [the Community Shield] would have been nice but we lost the way we did, which was unfortunate,” Gomez said.

“I think now that just made us even hungrier to get our hands on a piece of silverware again. I think that’s going to be our aim this year, just to get as much silverware as possible. Hopefully we can do it, but it’s obviously against a tough side and we know it won’t be easy. We’re looking forward to it.”

Chelsea, and their current manager Frank Lampard, will be desperate to bounce back after losing 4-0 to Manchester United on opening day, which should give some extra spice to the whole affair.

It’s still August, and right now the season is full of possibilities. Liverpool are in with a shot of winning five different trophies, of various importance, and I say bring on the quintuple.
