Joël Matip: US Tour Was “Intense”

The sweltering heat and strong competition gave Liverpool a good warm up going into this next season.

Anyone who lives in the midwest or east coast areas of the United States knows exactly how hot it was over these past couple of weeks. The heat then mixes with humidity and suddenly you’re one ingredient in a smelly, goopy, boiling stew of humanity all trying desperately not to get too close to one another or be outside any longer than necessary.

Last week, I used a delivery service when I ran out of toilet paper, because I didn’t want to leave the comfort of my air conditioner.

Which is all to say, playing a game of football isn’t the ideal activity for these kinds of days.

Joël Matip was very professional when discussing the conditions of Liverpool’s three game United States tour, deeming the exercise “intense” and not a face-melting nightmare.

“It was an intense period with good opponents and we worked hard to get a better fitness level and to get back in the mood,” he told the official site. ”We still have a lot of work to do and we are working hard. I’m looking forward and we are confident. We know it’s a long way to go and we still have a lot to improve, but we’re on a good way.”

The team’s next move is heading back to the UK and hitting Edinburgh, where they’ll play against Napoli at Hampden Park on Sunday. Rain is likely, but the temperature should be much more comfortable.

The new season exactly two weeks away, with Liverpool set to take on Norwich City on Friday, August 9th.
