Well that was alright!
Liverpool went to Bayern and won 3-1. After some nervy moments in the first half, Jürgen Klopp’s side showed their dominance in the second and deserved the win without doubt. Sadio Mané was the standout with his hat trick, but there were a number of strong performances.
Virgil van Dijk was delighted.
“It is a great evening”, Van Dijk told BT Sport, as reported by BBC Sport. “We knew it would be tough as they have a great team with fantastic players.
”We were unlucky on their equaliser but we got the job done and we’re into the last eight.
”It is very important and it feels amazing to score. We need to cover him [Andy Robertson - who misses the next game through suspension] but we will prepare and make sure everyone is ready.”
Similarly positive was the captain for most of the night, James Milner.
“It was a good result”, Milner added. “We didn’t play our best but it is about defending well and getting three points.
”This guy [Van Dijk] got another goal. To be honest, he should get more given his height!
“It says a lot about the squad we have got. To lose the captain that early [Jordan Henderson went off injured] was difficult but we dealt with it well. Fabinho came on and did well then we scored”.
With the success many Premier League sides are having in the tournament, Milner went on to say that “it is good for English football. That’s what you want. We don’t know who we are going to get in the next round but we have good feelings from last year so hopefully we can carry that on and go as far as we can.”
That was as enjoyable a result as we’ve had all season. Hopefully we can keep going in the next round and put on strong performances. One thing is for sure: no team will want to draw Liverpool.
