Earlier today, Liverpool released a 23-man squad for the Club World Cup later this month, a list that included all the usual first team names as well as a sprinkling of youth players, with Rhian Brewster, Curtis Jones, Harvey Elliott, and Neco Williams all on it.

That led to questions over just who would be left to face Aston Villa in the League Cup on December 17th, a day before Liverpool open their Club World Cup campaign with in the quarter-final, a game that will likely see them facing Liga MX’s Monterrey.

However, David Lynch of The Evening Standard has since confirmed the youthful quartet will remain in England for Tuesday’s game at Aston Villa before flying out to join the squad in Qatar. There has been no confirmation if any other players will do similar.

When the idea of back to back games was first proposed, there was some speculation that Jürgen Klopp might take just such an approach but with a smattering of senior players like James Milner, Adam Lallana, and Divock Origi staying to face Aston Villa.

However, when it was announced U23 boss Neil Critchley would oversee the match, the chances of that happening seemed lessened. But while it may be a purely U23 side that faces Villa, some of the players will subsequently head to Qatar.
