Winning trophies is fun, isn’t it? And when you have a player like Roberto Firmino on your team, it makes lifting those pretty, pretty hunks of metal even easier. Alisson learned that on Saturday when his fellow Brazilian slotted home an extra time game winner to give Liverpool their first ever Club World Cup trophy.
The game wasn’t a pretty one, but when it counted Firmino was able to take care of business and break the deadlock in the 99th minute. This was a huge moment for the club, but also for Firmino, who had been in a bit of a dry patch recently. But in the CWC, he shined, winning both matches for the Reds and securing their title as the world’s best.
“It is Bobby’s quality, his moves, and he is really calm in front of goal,” Alisson said after the game. “He trains like that, so when you train like that and you are concentrating, you arrive on the pitch and you do the right things. I’m really, really happy that he scored, he’s a guy who deserves everything and we are really happy.”
Reds fans across the globe will stay happy if the mad Brazilian genius has, in fact, gotten his groove back and can keep this great run of form going when they continue in their quest to bring the Premier League title back to Anfield and defend their Champions League title.
One of the best things about having the deadliest front three on the planet is that when one player slows down, the other two are there to pick up the slack. Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah are both playing exceptionally well, even as Firmino faltered a bit. But let’s hope that the second half of the season is Firmino’s time to shine and that there will be more madcap goal celebrations in our futures.
