Alisson and Liverpool Want to “Make History”

Fresh off their first Club World Cup title, Liverpool turn their attentions back to the Premier League.

Liverpool made a little bit of history on Saturday when they won the Club World Cup, officially becoming the best team in the world for the first time in their long and storied history before flying home to resume their efforts in the Premier League.

And that, says goalkeeper Alisson Becker, is the goal: making history. It’s what he and his Liverpool teammates are targeting in a season where they’re defending European champions and have the chance to break a 30-year domestic title drought.

“Every time we say, ‘We are Liverpool, this means more,’ maybe it makes no sense for those who are not Liverpool supporters but we really try to make this special,” said Alisson. “Not just for us players, but the supporters also who are all around the world.

“We need to give the best on the pitch. They have already the history but we are making history again. Football is like this, you always have a good opportunity. Thursday we have another big match against Leicester and this is the beauty of football.”

The beauty, perhaps, but also the difficulty. Game after game, week after week, month after month. For the game’s top stars, though, more games are proof of success, and the fixture congestion caused by the Club World Cup a reminder of their achievements.

That fixture congestion, though, does mean that there’s precious little time to rest or to celebrate, with just five days between the final whistle in Qatar and a league match against chasers Leicester City on Boxing Day for the players to prepare for.

“We try to make history again because we have a big goal and that is the Premier League and to try to defend the Champions League title,” the 27-year-old Brazilian added. “Always when you win it is special. Winning for Liverpool is even more special.

“We try to do our best, we are thinking about always the next game we have in front of us. We have many games to play, we are just halfway through the season so we have a long way to go and we need to keep playing who we are playing.”
