The biggest Liverpool headlines today will rightly go to news that Jürgen Klopp has extended his stay at the club through 2024, with the German manager committing to spending more than seven years at Anfield.

He wasn’t the only coach at the club signing a new contract, though, as his two key assistants also signed new, extended deals, with Peter Krawietz and Pepijn Lijnders both committing to their roles through 2024 as well.

On a day when Klopp signed his new deal and went out of his way to identify the importance of sporting director Michael Edwards in his and Liverpool’s success, it’s another reminder of the importance of the collective.

“It was so important to me that my staff also agreed these new deals with the club,” Klopp said of the news. “Without them being prepared to make the same commitment, quite frankly I would not have been able to do this.

“I am blessed to be surrounded by so many amazing staff; honestly, I feel the luckiest manager in the world in this regard. Peter and Pep have contributed just as much as I have to the development of this team.”

Klopp, rightly, gets the headlines. He is in many ways the face of the club, and his signing of an extended deal helps to ensure that both new signings and existing players can feel confident committing to the project.

The importance of those both above him and below him in the Liverpool hierarchy, though, cannot be overstated, and as part of the larger club culture they are key both to Liverpool’s present and to the club’s future.

“I have worked with Pete for many years, and even now I am still amazed at the things he spots,” Klopp said. “It has been one of the best professional experiences for me to see him grow and become the coach he now is.

“Pep, what can I say? What this guy doesn’t know about football isn’t worth knowing! I have never met a guy more passionate and dedicated. He is every inch a top manager of the future, but in the meantime, I am thankful we have him.

“We all share the same vision and we all share the same belief. And that’s why today is such an exciting day for myself, Pete, and Pep and why I am delighted they will be alongside me for the journey still to come.

“Both view this decision to extend exactly as I do: a fantastic opportunity to do what we all love at the best place in the world we could do it.”
