Last night, Liverpool and seven other club sides made it to the knockout rounds of the Champions League, as a dominant victory over Salzburg on the road to ensured the Reds’ European title defence would continue into the Round of 16.
Today, the other four groups wrapped up and another eight clubs qualified—which means we now know exactly who Liverpool can draw on Monday, December 16th when the draw is made in Nyon. And we want to know who you want to get.
After coming first in their group, Liverpool know they will draw a team that finished second in a group other than theirs. That means no Napoli next round. They also can’t draw another English side, and for this round they will play home second.
with Tottenham and Chelsea finishing second, it means five potential opponents. First are Group A runners-up Real Madrid, who have struggled this season—and finished second in the group to PSG—but have recently seen their domestic form improve.
Then, there’s surprise Group C runners-up Atalanta, who pipped Shakhtar Donetsk to second on the final day. Despite leaving it late, though—and sitting sixth at present in Serie A—they have one of the best records in 2019 in the big five leagues.
Atletico Madrid, meanwhile, finished second in Group D but have had an unexpectedly poor domestic campaign so far as they sit seventh in La Liga with just 19 goals scored in 16 games. They have scored just eight in six Champions League games.
In Group F, Borussia Dortmund came second, and few would be surprised to see Jürgen Klopp drawing his old side given that’s how these things often seem to go. And finally, Lyon as Group G runners-up offer a decent pairing on paper and a short trip.
