Whatever happened to Xherdan Shaqiri? It might not be the greatest mystery of our time, but for Liverpool fans it’s certainly been something they haven’t quite managed to figure out—and it’s a situation that’s been going on for the better part of a year now.
At least going off an interview out of Switzerland today, he’s still dealing with the calf injury picked up in training ahead of Liverpool’s League Cup tie against MK Dons, his latest setback after struggling with groin issues for the first half of the calendar year.
“I have a little setback at the moment,” Shaqiri, who was in Basel yesterday watching the Swiss Indoors tennis tournament, admitted to Blick. “Since I can do a part of my therapy here in Basel and now I had just enough time to be able to watch the Federer game.“
Go home to Basel where he grew up, continue his recovery, and watch Roger Federer beat Germany’s Peter Gojowczyk in straight sets. If you can’t be playing football, there are probably worse ways to spend your time. Still, he’d rather be playing football.
Hopefully, and hopefully sooner rather than later, he will be able to again, though given how little he’s played in 2019 and his admission that there has been a setback in his current recovery, it’s difficult to feel especially confident in that.
