No matter what happens the rest of the way in the Premier League and Europe when first choice goalkeeper Alisson returns following the international break, it seems certain that Leicester City won’t be the last fans see of Adrian.
The veteran Spaniard is guaranteed domestic cup duties, and could even be given the nod at the Club Wold Cup to ensure he stays match sharp. And whatever does happen next in the league and Europe, he will have played a part.
“He had to come in from West Ham and had to settle quickly,” John Achterberg, Liverpool’s goalkeeping coach, told The Echo this week. “Everything he has done so far has been really good, we have not been able to complain much at all.”
Top of the league with a perfect record—and the best defensive record—in the thick of it in their Champions League group, and with a piece of silverware already to show for the 2019-20 campaign. There’s nothing in that to complain about.
When it comes to the two big competitions Liverpool are in, the league and Champions League, you may not win them in the autumn but you can certainly lose them, and in the league in particular Adrian’s impact has been outstanding.
And beyond that impact on the pitch, Adrian has proved an instant fit in the dressing room, something his teammates took note of early on and that Achterberg and the coaches noticed, too. Adrian just, well, fits at Liverpool.
“It’s a different style [and] to be fair, he has picked it up really quickly,” the coach added. “He is a clam and confident guy but also a really good guy. He fits in well. Big credit to him and what he has done. It has been really good.”
