At the end of the summer break when it was revealed that Dejan Lovren would miss several of Liverpool’s opening matches, if felt extremely frustrating. Despite some early hiccups, Lovren had just come off of his best season at Liverpool, and helped Croatia make it to the World Cup final. Plenty of people were looking forward to seeing him continue his burgeoning partnership with Virgil van Dijk as the Premier League kicked off.

Now, weeks later, Lovren surely must be nervous about retaining his spot, and the disappointing news about his injury setback won’t help matters. The nature of the stomach injury has Liverpool trainers weary to bring him back too quickly, and the Liverpool ECHO are reporting that he is now not expected to make it onto the pitch until after the October international break.

That’s tough luck for Lovren, but the blow won’t hit the team as hard thanks to the emergence of Joe Gomez in that center-back position. The young Englishman has impressed in the first four games of the season, with some putting his performances above van Dijk’s so far.

Despite that, though, Liverpool face a heavy run of games between now and then, and it would be beneficial to have Lovren as another option for Klopp. It’s also hard for some fans to shake off the lingering concern for Gomez’s continuing good fitness after watching his struggles over the last several years.

So rub your lucky rabbit’s foot, tap wood, and do whatever you have to do to help ensure that Gomez remains fit and Lovren gets healthy as soon as possible.
