It’s been a good start to the season for Liverpool, but nobody should be getting too carried away by it. That’s the message in Liverpool’s dressing room, where the players are focused on continuing to earn results and keep the wins coming.
Three wins and three clean sheets to start the season won’t mean anything if they don’t keep winning or if the players allow themselves to start to think the points they’ve earned so far are something of a guarantee of any future good results.
“We feel good, but the most important thing is that we’re going to try to feel as good for a long time,” was Gini Wijnaldum’s spin on the situation, and the versatile midfielder has done his bit by filling every midfield role already in the early going.
“The Premier League has just started. What we have to do is stay confident but know that sometimes things can go wrong, so we have to work hard to keep things as good as they are right now. We have to work really hard to keep it how it is.”
He says the players will also draw on the experience of last season’s Champions League run and top four fight to help, something possible because that group was kept together over the summer, providing a rare kind of squad continuity.
“We are all confident, as we were last season, but we must not look too far ahead,” Wijnaldum added. “We must look at it game by game and then we will see where we finish at the end. We know now what we have to do better.”
