Topping the table at the end of August is a long way from doing so in May when the Premier League season ends. Still, first is never a bad place to be in, and Liverpool have started the new season well, giving the club a platform to build on.
Now, the challenge is to keep earning results and to stay on top, which is what Sadio Mané wants to see in the coming weeks and months, with the star winger believing this is a side good enough to be in the mix all the way through to the end of the season.
“It is a great challenge,” Mané said. “It is true that while we have won trophies we have not won the League. We have to try our best to fix that this year, which is why we have signed great players—it is a great challenge to attempt to win the league.”
More than that, Mané thinks a “big club” like Liverpool should be challenging not just for the domestic title but for European glory as well, and while that’s setting the bar very high, after last season’s exploits and this summer’s new signings it isn’t unreasonable.
Liverpool are good enough to challenge for the league. And they’re good enough to challenge for the Champions League. That doesn’t mean they’ll win either, of course, but they are now, after a long time in the wilderness, back in that conversation.
“We are a great club,” Mané added. “We want to do something special. Now everyone is talking about us, but we have to go calmly, game by game. Let’s not talk about trophies now, it’s early. This season has just begun.”
