Joe Gomez cannot seem to catch a break. The perpetually injured young defender has once again seen his season cut short for Liverpool. This time it’s due to an ankle issue which required surgery. The procedure destines Gomez to miss the remainder of Liverpool’s season, which includes a big, top four deciding match, as well as the Champions League final against Real Madrid.
This also means that any hope that the English international had of booking a trip to Russia this summer is gone, since his recuperation will take the majority of the summer. Gomez joins his teammate Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in watching England’s World Cup campaign from home.
As expected, this turn of events has devastated Gomez, who put out a statement on Instagram.
“Gutted to confirm that my season for both club and country is over having undergone successful ankle surgery. Been a tough few weeks trying everything possible to be available on the pitch to help the team. I’m going to do all I can to get back and be in the best possible shape for pre-season. The focus now is to support the team in the two biggest games of the season! Thank you for all the support over the course of the season. YNWA.”
Hopefully the summer spent recovering will serve him well, and he’ll return to Klopp’s squad in time for the pre-season preparations. At only 20-years-old, Gomez has his best years still ahead of him, and it would be nice to see him get a full season to contribute to the team and fight for a center half spot.
