Jürgen Klopp will hope his second visit to a Champions League final comes complete with shiny silverware when Liverpool step out at the NSC Olimpiyskiy Stadium in Kiev. The manager lost to Bayern Munich late in the 2014 final when Arjen Robben destroyed the dreams of his Borussia Dortmund side.
Klopp is all too aware of what a rare thing it can be even making it to a big final.
“Being in the final is a big honour and a big thing, it is unbelievable. Most people in the world try their whole life and don’t go to one final because you need luck in specific moments.
“We had that this season, but we deserved it I think. Now we are there again and it is such a big thing for us.”
It’s a huge thing considering Liverpool had to qualify for the group stage and then were only tipped for a strong showing into the knockout rounds but probably, and with respect, losing out to one of the big boys. It never happen though because Liverpool this season.
“In the moment when we qualified,” Klopp said, “I didn’t think about winning the title, but when we went through against Hoffenheim, I knew that our football could really fit to the competition.
“We needed luck against City of course. Exactly the same against Roma. We were good enough in the competition but we could have lost in Rome 5-2 or at City we could have been 2-0 or 3-0 down at half-time.
“That doesn’t mean we would have been out but it would have made it more difficult. I knew we could be brilliant in the competition but going to the final, that is so special. No, I never had an idea about that.”
Liverpool will face up with Real Madrid in Kiev because they’ve played some amazing attacking football through the competition and you can bet Klopp will use all the firepower of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mané to take the game to Los Blancos.
Madrid are the favorites and will be under more pressure to bring home a third consecutive trophy and to not get stomped by the surprising Reds. Klopp is happy with his team’s underdog status going into the final.
“Yes, Real Madrid are more experienced,” said Klopp. “They are the highest quality. They can make it three in a row, but we are Liverpool. That’s something not to forget, and we feel that.
”If you are not Liverpool, there’s a chance to win. But we are Liverpool, and we like that.
“And to be honest, we like the role we are in. We like the situation.
”Now everything is positive. There will be pressure a few days before the game of course. We will feel that.
”But it’s only opportunity. Everything is possible.”
