So far this season, Adam Lallana has almost been a forgotten player for Liverpool. Despite being a mainstay and one of the stand out players in last year’s squad, injuries have so far derailed his 2017/18 campaign.
However, according to former Red Neil Mellor, Lallana now has a chance to prove himself, especially with a snake-shaped hole that has been left in the midfield.
“The Porto win was superb and feels like ages ago now. It’s always difficult to make changes after that sort of performance but for me this could be the perfect time to see Adam Lallana return to the starting line-up,” Mellor said in an interview with The Echo.
”Even more so with the departure of Philippe Coutinho I think he’s a really important player for Liverpool. He can offer a creative spark and a link between the midfield and attack as he gets back to full fitness.
”The break since the Porto game will probably have done him more good than any other player. Let’s hope he’s as sharp as his new haircut.”
”The front three have been special for Liverpool and it’s difficult to see how much better they can get but I think Lallana can make them even better.”
Well, at least one person thinks his new haircut is good.
Anyway, a return to fitness for Lallana could only be a good thing for a midfield that has far too often looked pedestrian (or rather, a midsize sedan to the supercar front three).
That said, it is odd that pundits still talk about a need to replace Coutinho, when Liverpool clearly seem to be doing just fine without him.
