Nothing gets the blood pumping quite like a bizarre, last gasp goal against your bitter rivals. If any one event was to serve as a catalyst for Liverpool dominating the upcoming festive period, then surely Sunday’s victory over Everton would be it.
At least that’s what Scouse full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold is hoping. As the young defender basks in the afterglow of yet another Merseyside derby win for the Reds, he spoke about his hopes that Divock Origi’s lucky header will help propel them forward.
“It’s something you dream of,” he said about the win. “It’s very special to play in the Merseyside derby and especially to win. It’s one that all the players will remember for a long time and hopefully the fans will as well because we’ve dominated the fixture for so long and we’ve extended it. It’s something we’ve got to be proud of and hopefully it will give us momentum to go into this Christmas run, which will be tough for us, and hopefully we’ll get a few more results like this.”
Over the next week, the Reds travel to play both Burnley and Bournemouth in the league before the huge Champions League clash against Napoli that will decide whether Liverpool continue on in the Champions League or fall down to the Europa League. There’s no rest after that when Manchester United will come calling, followed by Wolves, Newcastle, and finally the Arsenal return fixture to round out December.
