Liverpool Football Club have played 17 league games and conceded only seven goals. They have the best defense in the league, and it’s really not even close.
But during Sunday’s victory against Manchester United, an error by goalkeeper Alisson Becker cost them goal number seven and also their 11th clean sheet when he fumbled a ball that he should have controlled, allowing Jesse Lingard to score a first half equalizer. And while the Brazilian has been a revelation between the sticks for Liverpool this season, when you make a mistake, you should expect to get a little trash talk from your teammates about it.
“I said to him, ‘We have no clean sheet because of you! Why did you ruin the clean sheet?’” van Dijk revealed after the game.
But fear not, my friends. There’s no soap opera-style rift between the world’s best center-back and the world’s best goalkeeper.
“I made a joke out of it. He’s been fantastic for us. It happens, everyone makes mistakes,” van Dijk continued before going on to defend Alisson.
“It’s about how we react and he did brilliantly in the second half. He didn’t get nervous. You see it a lot… maybe I didn’t react as well as maybe I could have. It happens sometimes. We had to all bounce back and we did.”
So while I’m sure that if you search the internet long enough, you’ll eventually find a Liverpool “fan” advocating for Alisson to get shipped off for his error on Sunday, it appears that his teammates have forgiven him.
Just don’t let it happen again, buddy.
