Luis Garcia: Liverpool Must Win a Trophy This Season

The former Red believes Klopp has what it takes to make it happen.

Liverpool have won two trophies in the last eleven years, and the lack of silverware is becoming more and more of a sore point for everyone. Luis Garcia, part of the team that lifted both the Champions League trophy and the FA Cup under Benitez, believes that the team Klopp has assembled is as ready as they can be and that this is the season for them.

"I think for Jurgen this has to be the season,” Garcia told the Echo. "He has been at the club nearly two years and has been trying to build a team similar to the one he had back in Germany.”

"This has to be the season where the trophies are coming back to the club. I think he is doing a good job and has brought in some of the players he wanted. Now it’s the time for him to show that the team is ready to face everything."

The question that’s on everyone’s mind, however, is whether the failure to fix Liverpool’s defensive problems will be this season’s undoing. But Garcia believes the squad Klopp is working with is better than the Champions League-winning side in 2005.

"If you look at the players and some of their performances you can say why not have a go at the Champions League," he added. “When I was at Liverpool nobody really knew too much about us until we reached the 2005 final. Everyone was surprised, but I think the team now is a lot better than back then.”

“So why not? You know that this team on their day can surprise you.”

Liverpool return to the Champions League on Wednesday when they host Sevilla.
