Liverpool kicked off pre-season in style with a 4-0 victory over Tranmere Rovers, but it sounds like Jordan Henderson would have been happy no matter what the score.
“It was nice to be back on the pitch and being in front of a crowd with the kit on,” Henderson told the club’s official website after the game. “I’ve been looking forward to this for a long time now, all summer really, so it’s good to finally be out on the pitch and playing with the lads.”
The captain hasn’t been on the pitch since February due to a foot injury he sustained during training. A lot has been said about the role Henderson continued to play through the latter half of the season, providing the team with leadership from the sidelines, but Henderson is keen to give credit to his teammates and the example they set every day.
“It’s not only my role, but a lot of the other senior lads will be driving the team forward and we will be expecting that in every training session, every game.”
Henderson is also pleased with the work the squad’s been putting in and hopes (like we all do) that pre-season will be just the start Liverpool need to have an excellent season.
“We’ve got a good set of lads who want to work hard and I’m sure we will work very hard over the next few weeks and we will be ready for the first game of the season.”
“Everybody enjoyed [the Tranmere game] and we are looking forward to the next game. Pre-season is very important for all the lads coming back in from their holidays. We have started really well in training and in the game. It’s a good start for us.”
