Following earlier news that Liverpool would compete in the Asia Trophy and Audi Cup this summer along with joining Hertha Berlin for 125th anniversary celebrations at the Olympiastadion, today the club have confirmed that they will face Athletic Bilbao in Dublin.
The game has been set for a 5:15PM kickoff on Saturday, August 5th, a week before the 2017-18 Premier League season gets under way, and is likely to stand as their final pre-season game of the summer regardless of any potential further additions to their schedule.
It will be the first time that the two sides have played each other in over thirty years, with their last meeting in the 1984 European Cup. As for the venue, Liverpool last played in Dublin three summers ago, when they beat Shamrock Rovers 4-0 in a pre-season friendly.
Liverpool’s current pre-season schedule sees them kick things off from Hong Kong, where they will participate in the Asia Trophy on July 19th and 22nd before flying back to Europe to face Hertha on July 29th. They then head to Munich for the Audi Cup on August 1st and 2nd.
Their opponents in both the Asia Trophy and Audi Cup remain uncertain. They know that in Hong Kong they will face one of Crystal Palace, Leicester City, or West Brom in the first match before, if they win their own first match, facing the other game’s winner in the second.
For the Audi Cup the situation is similar, with Bayern Munich, Atletico Madrid, and (if their European commitments allow it) AC Milan their possible opponents and the winners and losers of the first day’s game to be paired off in the second.
