If Liverpool beat Middlesbrough on Sunday everyone gets ice cream and the team will qualify for next year’s Champions League competition. Obviously, this would be good. And if you don’t like ice cream, that’s fine. You don’t have to eat it. Put it in the freezer. Save it. It’ll probably be worth something some day. Maybe money.

Speaking of money, he segued effortlessly, locking down Champions League football is also worth money. And quite a bit of it. A whole roster of players opens up for Liverpool if the team get into Europe. The club would have the funds to make high-end buys and could offer playing time in the world’s most prestigious club tournament.

“I said before, Champions League is a wonderful competition,” said Jürgen Klopp. “Fans, players, managers love it.

“But of course you can earn a lot of money. It’s money we didn’t have last year or the year before.

“It’s one part of it but we are already in a good position. We are a club in a good financial position. We have money to spend.”

But the manager isn’t getting too worked up over players that will insist on Champions Leaque qualification before signing with the club.

“It should not sound negative,” Klopp said, “but if the Champions League is the only reason why a player is coming, it makes no sense for him and makes no sense for us.”

Always a manager with a mind towards development, Klopp describes Liverpool as “a really interesting project” and is confident in the work he and the club are doing to get the right targets leaning on the right walls at Melwood this summer.

“There are a few players out there,” said Klopp. “And you can be sure we have spoken to them.”
