The signings are coming thick and fast now. First, the club and Philippe Coutinho agree to new contract terms, securing the Brazilian’s services until 2022. Today, we are hearing that Liverpool have been making moves to lock down fresh terms for young defender, Joe Gomez. But, these aren’t signings, you say. These are new contracts to existing players. And I know that. But I want this good news to sound like great news.
Joe Gomez is a still a prospect for the future but, when Jürgen Klopp gives you his confidence and spearheads an initiative to keep you around, we’re probably talking more near-future than far. We’ve heard all the good things that were said about Gomez as he carried out his rehabilitation with Liverpool’s under-23s. We’ve heard all the good things that have been said about Gomez since he was reintroduced into the Melwood camp.
Good things are following Joe Gomez around these days. The 19-year-old center half is expected to be offered and agree to a contract extension that runs until 2022.
Gomez is still somewhere behind Ragnar Klavan on the Premier League depth chart, for now. But the youngster impressed on his return to action against Plymouth Argyle in the FA Cup and he’s likely to get another chance to prove himself against Wolverhampton on Saturday.
Klopp will be managing the teenager’s time under the spotlight, not wanting to put undue pressure on the player, with a goal of slowly and naturally giving Gomez his trust. But this new contract shows that Klopp has belief in Gomez to grow into an asset to the club and an asset to the manager’s style of play. Oh, to be a budding teenager taken under the wing of Jürgen Klopp. Great news.
