Klopp Responds To Sakho's Snapchat Stunt

Sakho took to the social media network to voice his frustrations at the club. Klopp’s response was prickly but measured.

Earlier today we reported on Mamadou Sakho taking to social media network Snapchat to talk about his difficulties in the team. Over five posts, the French international aired his grievances with manager Jürgen Klopp and insisted that, whatever the boss’ reasons are for leaving him off the teamsheet, it has nothing to do with fitness.

Sakho posted his snaps just hours before Liverpool’s Premier League match at home to Hull City. Whatever else you think about Sakho’s statement, the timing was a bit problematic, aimed at maximizing attention at the expense of the team’s matchday preparations.

Klopp did not address the situation before the game, but he did have some words for the out-of-favor defender after his side’s 5-1 win.

The thing is, I was kind of confronted this morning that there was something I should know about. On a match day I am completely in the wrong mood for these things. [...] It is not a right moment to speak about it because I think most of the time in life it makes sense to think about something and then you can give the right answer. It's not positive, I would say.

Asked when he might deal with this situation, Klopp's response was terse and foreboding. “I think I will address the situation when I think it's the right moment. I didn't decide until now when it is but it is not Christmas. “

At the risk of speculating over his motives, it’s not entirely unreasonable to guess that Sakho wanted to settle the issue of his place in the squad sooner rather than later. Given Klopp’s testy response in the post-match press conference, Sakho looks set to receive his wish. Whether it’ll be the outcome he wanted is another matter entirely.
