Freaking out over potential injuries is commonplace here at Liverpool. We're used to our best players going down just when we need them, or just when they're starting to show some potential. We've been burned too often and it's easy to immediately think the worst when someone limps off the pitch.
It seems the time has come for Joel Matip to be subject to Liverpool's injury concerns. One of our most promising summer signings and looking sharper with every pre-season match, the former FC Schalke man spurred new concerns when he had to leave the match against Wigan towards the end of the second half. However, in the post-match press conference Jürgen Klopp came to his side, saying "I hope it's only a minor problem. He said he's had it one or two times already."
The boss went on to explain, "It's the foot he had problems with in the past and then he had a little bit of pain when pre-season started because of the intensity. He's used to it. Hopefully it is like this because everyone can see he's in a real good way. I think tomorrow he'll rest, then he can go again."
Matip was also chosen to attempt a full 90 minutes for the first time this pre-season, so that of course factored into Klopp's early assessment. With the boss' optimistic outlook despite our injury history, it makes the news a little bit easier to take down.
