Emre Can Determined to Add Goals

Though he made his senior German debut at right back, Emre Can's got goals on his mind as he targets improving the attacking side of his game this season.

Having started Germany's last match, albeit in the right back role he's struggled with for Liverpool, the expectation is that Emre Can will get his second senior German cap today against Scotland as they continue their Euro 2016 qualification.

At the club level, though, the player appears to have put his time at right back firmly behind him and his focus is on improving his game going forward. He's been talked about at times as a potential defensive midfielder, but Can is targeting an improved goals and assists tally.

"I want to do more in attack and I know I can improve in that area of my game," said the midfielder. "I want to do much more going forward in terms of scoring goals and providing assists. I'm trying to bring that into my game and I'm working on it in training."

Can's versatility means he could probably succeed at becoming any sort of midfielder he wanted to. His natural instincts, though—as well as a clear rawness to his defensive reading of the game—do hint towards a player who's best suited as an all-action, box-to-box sort.

Whether that means spending the season splitting time with Jordan Henderson and James Milner as a midfield shuttler or playing as part of a flexible trio lacking a defensive specialist, he will get minutes. Can knows, though, that he still has to compete hard for playing time.

"I think every player aims to get in the starting eleven so I work hard in training and I always try to show what I can do and impress the manager so he picks me," he added. "At the end of the day I think the competition for places is good for the team.

"I'm ready to take more responsibility as I'm in my second season. My English is improving and I've matured as a player.  Playing in midfield means you have to take more responsibility. That means I want to score more goals and help the team to get results."
