Liverpool have submitted their full Europa League squad, and while it's no surprise to find that out of favour Jose Enrique hasn't been included, youngster Joao Carlos Teixeira finds himself of a victim of the numbers game and has been left off as well.
Clubs are allowed to register a 25-man squad with UEFA for European competition, but four of those players must count as home-grown—that is, players who have been trained by an English club—and a further four must be club-trained. Liverpool have plenty of English players. They don't have many club-trained.
In fact, with Jon Flanagan out injured, Liverpool have chosen to submit a final roster without any club-trained players on it. Without any of the four club-trained slots filled, it means Liverpool can only register 21 names in total. And amongst those 21 names, there is no room for Teixeira.
Many hoped that Teixeira, now 22 years old and following a strong pre-season, would be given playing time against some of the weaker opponents Liverpool would face in the early stages of the Europa League. That is now certain not to happen, raising doubts about whether Teixeira has future at the club.
