Joao Carlos Teixeira was one of the most promising youngsters Sporting CP, and after being the best player on the pitch in a match against Liverpool’s youth team, the Reds were quick to snatch him up in spite of a back injury that looked set to keep him on the sidelines for a long time.
Having finally fully recovered last season, he impressed in the reserves for Liverpool. Steven Gerrard identified him as the best player at the club not in the first team. His development may have been delayed by injury, but expectation remained high, and this season he headed off to Brighton & Hove Albion on loan.
Nearing the end of an impressive season that sees him one of the frontrunners to nab player of the season honours for the Championship club, Teireira has suffered a second injury blow, breaking his leg against Huddlesfield Town. He has today been sent back to his parent club.
Liverpool had planned on giving the 22-year-old a chance to stick with the first team next season. Instead, there will now be doubts as to whether he will be fully recovered in fit for the start of preseason. Teixeira’s season ends with him having scored five goals and four assists in 34 appearances for Brighton.
