Late last month, word leaked that Liverpool were planning a second testimonial for Steven Gerrard, and that it would be held during the March international break. Today, we learn a few more of the details—as well as some of the players who have already confirmed their involvement, including Luis Suarez, Xabi Alonso, Dirk Kuyt, and Fernando Torres.

We also learn it’s no longer being called a testimonial. Instead it’s a charity all-star match to benefit the Liverpool FC Foundation, with one of the sides being led by Steven Gerrard and the other by Jamie Carragher. And in addition to the former Reds who have already signed on, a few of the Premier League’s biggest stars of the past 15 years will be in attendance.

Thierry Henry, John Terry, and Didier Drogba have all confirmed that they will take part in the match, and whether or not it’s officially being billed as an all-star match, the inclusion of some of the league’s biggest stars during Gerrard’s Liverpool career will do little to change the perception that a testimonial match by any other name is still a testimonial match.

As previously reported, the match will take place on Sunday, March 29th. Any spots on the squads not filled by returning players and special guests will be taken by current Liverpool senior and youth players who aren’t off on international duty—which unfortunately means current stars like Philippe Coutinho, Raheem Sterling, and Jordan Henderson won’t be involved.
