Earlier this month, Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher selected starting elevens for Sunday’s charity all star testimonial based on the 22 confirmed players—including Gerrard and Carragher—set to appear. Fans were always promised a few extra guest stars, though, and with the match only a few days away a complete list has been released.
Nine new names have been added, and while the star wattage may not measure up to the likes of Luis Suarez and Thierry Henry, at the end of the day they’re all players Gerrard wanted involved in his second testimonial and it’s a credit to them that they have confirmed their presence—particularly in the case of a few players who may not be all that fondly remembered by Liverpool fans.
Added to Team Gerrard are former teammates Charlie Adam and Jay Spearing along with the captain’s cousin, Anthony Gerrard, and former rumoured Liverpool transfer targets Scott Dann and Ashley Williams. Added to Team Carragher are former teammates Stewart Downing, Harry Kewell, and Peter Gulacsi, as well as former rumoured Liverpool target Gael Clichy.
A handful of Liverpool youth players, as well as Lucas Leiva and Jon Flanagan—both working their way back to full fitness—are also expected to be involved. Roy Evans will be guest manager of Team Carragher, while if there is to be a guest manager for Team Gerrard, he has not yet been named.
