Defeat is unwelcome enough, but to lose a key player through injury too? Unthinkable. Well, Liverpool's table-topping injury list keeps on growing after Mamadou Sakho was forced off before half time owing to a knee complaint. Earlier in the day, reports indicated that James Milner suffered a hamstring injury, ruling him out of the Crystal Palace game and England's upcoming friendlies. Conor Randall was also injured this week in what look to be a serious problem for the club.
Sakho will have scan on Monday to discover how severe his knee injury is, but this reveals the majestic defender's greatest weakness: durability. He'll pick up an injury every so often, but what about the other players who seem to pick up injuries here, there, and what feels like everywhere? Maybe Jürgen Klopp will have to rethink his stance on the club's medical team as the situation is becoming more than a little concerning.
Liverpool's manager, however, was naturally concerned about the health of his key defender at a time when defensive depth is extremely thin across the backline after neglecting to purchase more than one fullback in the summer (Joe Gomez is undoubtedly talented but not a left back) and injuries to much-needed squad players. The absences of Jon Flanagan, Kolo Touré, Connor Randall, the aforementioned Gomez, and that friendly left back who used to be an option once upon a time mean that any further physical mishaps would be extremely problematic.
I don't know. It's too bad that he couldn't play on, but we have to wait for the scan tomorrow evening, because it needs a little bit of time. I don't want to speculate, but of course we hope that it's not too serious. That was the worst thing in the game, I would prefer to lose 4-1 and keep him in the team. Now we have to see.
Everything is not the worst in this new era of Klopp, but everything's not cool either. Liverpool could have a few players return from injury during and after the international break, but whether they would be available for the tough trip to the Etihad is unknown. Maybe Sakho's scan will ease fears, but as it stands, the self-titled "Liverpool soldier" joins Jordan Henderson, Daniel Sturridge, Danny Ings, Joe Gomez, James Milner, Kolo Touré, Connor Randall, Jon Flanagan, and Jordan Rossiter on the treatment bench. Crikey.
