Benteke Faces Fitness Test Before Derby

New, comments

Although initial reports had the Belgian striker out for the Merseyside Derby, Rodgers indicated that there's an outside chance the big man could see some minutes on Sunday.

Liverpool's status as a favorite or underdog for tomorrow's Derby is very much up for debate. What isn't up for debate is how Liverpool are in desperate need of attacking options with the injuries to Christian Benteke, Roberto Firmino, and Jordan Henderson, and the underwhelming play of Jordon Ibe (something, something Markovic, grumble).

However, the Reds might get good news considering Benteke's ongoing hamstring woes. According to Brendan Rodgers the Belgian international may yet be cleared to play on Sunday depending on his fitness today:

"We're seeing how Christian Benteke is over the course of the next 24 hours. Apart from that, the squad will be pretty much the same as the Aston Villa game."

Benteke's inclusion, even as a possible sub, should give Liverpool some options for tomorrow's clash.

Rodgers also addressed the process of bringing Daniel Sturridge back into the fold after his lengthy lay off:

"It's just about managing Daniel's fitness. He's been out for a real long time, he's come back early through the work and the effort he's put in and with so many games, we just have to make sure we look after him.

"He's still looking to get to full match fitness. There'll come a point where he will be available to play in all of the games, or certainly be available for them.

Well, hopefully not all of the games, right Brendan? Right?
