With the hysteria and unfettered optimism greeting Jürgen Klopp's arrival as Liverpool manager, some onlookers presume that fans are convinced that Merseyside's finest will sweep all before them during the remainder of this campaign. Many passionate Reds have seen the club lose its way over the past 12 months with no discernible style of play as Brendan Rodgers came under greater pressure, resorted to a more pragmatic approach to secure results, and seemed unable to rediscover an enthralling, attacking formula.
Optimism surrounds the club, but according to Liverpool's new manager, there appears to be no set targets for the season. Whether he secretly thinks a top four finish or something more is achievable is unknown, but for now, the focus appears to be on getting the team playing in a way that's positively identifiable.
"I spoke to the people in charge of the club at length," Klopp reportedly said to German tabloid Bild. "[There are no targets for this season], just simply to play football with a recognisable brand."
The features of his tactics at Borussia Dortmund are well-known. Gegenpressing, speed, fitness, verticality, quick combinations, organisation, and a zeal for competing for everything on the pitch. Whether that can happen quickly at Liverpool is open to question. The majority of the first-team squad are young and energetic enough to carry out Klopp's requirements, although it's inevitable that some players will prove to be unsuitable for the 48-year-old's particular demands as upgrades are sought in the transfer market.
However, Liverpool have at least 16 games in all competitions before the January transfer window opens, maybe more with progress in the Capital One Cup. Three points and a seven goal swing in terms of goal differential separate Liverpool from fourth, while six points and fifteen goals represent the distance from top spot. It's clear that results weren't the only problem under Rodgers, inspiring performances were increasingly in short supply. Klopp may not have spoken extensively on the subject of aims for the season, but there is little need to.
Whatever work is undertaken during training and in meetings must be seen on matchdays. That may take time, but it's not a goal that can be so easily dismissed. Once a "recognisable brand" of football is implemented, whatever targets there are for this season and beyond will become a little bit easier to achieve.
