MONTERREY VS LIVERPOOL
| Wednesday, December 18th |
Club World Cup | Khalifa International Stadium
5:30PM GMT/12:30PM EST
Although the Club World Cup kicked off in Qatar (boo!!!) last week, Liverpool begin their involvement tonight against CONCACAF Champions League winners Monterrey. The Mexican side advanced to the semifinal after a 3-2 win against the host nation representatives Al Sadd. Al Sadd, incidentally, went on to lose the fifth place match 6-2 to Tunisian side Espérance Sportive de Tunis.
The Reds—who are favorites for the tournament—will be big favorites to advance against Monterray tonight. Should Liverpool win, they will face off against South American champions Flamengo, who booked their ticket to Saturday’s final after a 3-1 win over Saudi side Al-Hilal.
It’s difficult to know what to expect from Monterrey. They’ll certainly want to win tonight’s game, but they almost certainly don’t have the talent to do so. Liverpool will be without Georginio Wijnaldum tonight; the Dutch midfielder traveled with the squad, but has been declared not fit to play. There will probably be a few more changes to the side that played this weekend, as Jurgen Klopp has not been shy about rotating so far this December.
