The teams have been settled for - last year’s? This year’s? - the European Championship and the groups are sorted. Among those Liverpool players looking forward to the tournament is Andy Robertson, who’s earned the privilege to captain his native Scotland in the competition.
Scotland was placed into Group D along with World Cup runners-up Croatia, Czech Republic and England.
Robertson was asked how he felt about facing his Liverpool teammates Trent Alexander-Arnold and Jordan Henderson.
“I just spoke to Hendo last night,” Robertson said with a smirk. “I think they’re at the hotel we’re going to be staying in for camp. So I was just telling him to make sure he doesn’t mess up my room.”
On a more serious note, Robertson added, “Obviously I’m close to these players. We’re a tight-knit group at Liverpool. They’re really good friends.”
In addition to his confirmed opponents, Robertson said that he looked forward to seeing Gini Wijnaldum, who recently confirmed his move away from Anfield. Wijnaldum will play for the Netherlands in Group C. Another old Liverpool friend for Robertson to catch up with is Dejan Lovren, who he’ll come toe-to-toe with in Group D when Scotland faces Croatia.
The tournament kicks off next Friday, June 11th. The opening match will be Turkey v. Italy in Group A.
