The knockout phase of the 2018 World Cup served up quite the appetizer on its first day, offering viewers the drama of seeing two of the sport’s biggest names in Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo crash out of the tournament. In addition to two entertaining contests, we also had the opportunity to see Kylian Mbappé - already a star to many football observers - truly announce himself on the global stage.

The action continues with the tournament hosts Russia taking on perennial heavyweights Spain. Stanislav Cherchesov’s Russia side strolled out to two emphatic victories in the group stages over Saudi Arabia and Egypt, before stumbling badly in arguably their first real test against Uruguay. They will be looking to recapture some of the enterprise from their early matches and capitalize on the home crowd’s energy as they take on a Spanish side that has not exactly impressed.

The second match of the day sees Croatia - featuring Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren - come up against a Denmark side that finished second in their group behind France. Described as tournament dark horses by more than a few, Croatia are no longer running below the radar, having assembled a perfect record in their group while humbling Argentina 3-0 en route to the knockout rounds. Can they maintain their momentum, or will the increased attention hobble their play?
