Russia and Uruguay are through in Group A. Morocco has been eliminated in Group B. And today could give us more clarity. First up are a pair of Group C games, and if Denmark can beat Australia while France beats Peru that will be the end of it. Both underdogs, though, had moments in their first games. And both favourites had moments of weakness. Upsets here may not seem likely—after all, if they were likely they wouldn’t be upsets—but they don’t seem impossible. Especially for a Peru side that did everything but score last time out facing a France side that’s looking less than the sum of its parts.

Afterwards, the day’s headlining match closes things out with the top two sides in Group D. Argentina struggled against Iceland in game one and are only ahead of them in the group table due to the fair play tiebreaker—if teams are level on goal differential and goals scored that’s the next determining factor—but they will always be favourites in the minds of many, at least while Lionel Messi’s around. Croatia and Dejan Lovren, on the other hand, absolutely dominated Nigeria in game one, making an early case for tournament dark horse status. If they can beat Argentina they will secure advancement and have fans dreaming of unlikely glory.
