With injuries and questionable form an issue for some of Liverpool’s key English players at the start of the season, in the end Roy Hodgson and the national team have only been able to call upon Nathaniel Clyne and James Milner for their upcoming Euro 2016 qualifiers.
There had been some hope that Jordan Henderson would prove fit enough to be involved, but after he missed out against West Ham on Saturday, it was decided that it was better to leave him off the squad and give him time to fully recover from his foot injury. Adam Lallana will also miss through injury.
Having played six out of ten games, England have all but clinched advancement. They have a perfect record and 18 points so far along with a +15 goal differential. The Swiss sit second in qualifying Group E with 12 points, and the two sides have an important match next week at Wembley.
Before then, though, England travel to face minnows San Marino on Saturday while Switzerland face a much tougher test as they host third place Slovenia. With the top two sides in each group guaranteed a place at the Euros, four points would clinch advancement no matter what happens elsewhere.
Saturday's match against San Marino will kick off at 5PM BST, with the match against Switzerland scheduled for a 7:45PM BST kickoff on Tuesday, September 8th. Both games will be broadcast live on ITV.
