The Liverpool left back picked up an ankle injury with Scotland but it appears minor and he is likely to return to action within a week.

When Andy Robertson was forced off the pitch in the first half with Scotland in their game against Northern Ireland, many Liverpool fans feared a lengthy layoff was on the cards and that Robertson could be set to miss much of the 2023-24 season’s final stretch.

However, following his return to the club and having gotten the results of scans on his ankle back, there appears to be very good news for the club and player with reports suggesting that Robertson is only expected to miss a matter of days rather than weeks or months.

With no damage to his muscles or ligaments discovered, the only game Robertson seems certain to miss is Sunday’s Premier League clash at Anfield against Brighton, with a return against Sheffield United next Thursday then considered likely for the 30-year-old.

Following that mid-week league tie, the Reds then face Manchester United at Old Trafford the following Sunday before resuming their Europa League campaign with the first leg of their quarter-final against Atalanta set to take place at Anfield on the 11th of April.

Everton in Resurgent Season

Liverpool Women are likely out of the running to finish in the European places but deserve praise for being in the conversation deep into March.

A draw on Sunday against Everton at Goodison came as something of a blow to Liverpool Women’s hopes of finishing in the European places, with the Reds dropping two points against bottom half opposition in a game where they were the better side.

For manager Matt Beard, though, context matters. The context of a resurgent season; of competing for a finish few truly expected at its start; of winning three games in a row heading into last Sunday to even put themselves in the thick of the top three fight.

“It’s a tough game to play in because of what’s at stake,” Beard said after having had time to digest the result. “But that’s 10 points out of a possible 12 from our last four games, so I would have taken that if you had offered it after we lost at home to Arsenal.”

With five games to go, Liverpool are eight points back of Arsenal in third, with the top three sides in the FAWSL qualifying for the Champions League. Add in goal difference, and the Reds would likely need three more wins than Arsenal in those five games.

Realistically, that likely ends any top three hopes—but with a single draw signalling that, they always likely needed to be perfect down the final stretch to have a chance. In that light, even making a race of it for a time should be cast as something of a success.

For a side that for years seemed little more than an afterthought for the club, to put the traditional powers in the FAWSL under pressure and be in the European conversation late into March is an achievement, no matter what happens the rest of the way.

“We now have five games to go and there are still many points to play for,” Beard added. “Our aim is to finish as high in the table as we possibly can. We host Manchester City on Saturday. They are a team, of course, who are fighting hard to win the title.

“I think they have been the most consistent team over the course of the season so far. They are a team that has been playing together now for nearly 18 months. But from our point of view, we know we can compete and we know that we can beat them.”

The Liverpool fullback was pushed higher up the pitch and scored the decisive goal for his country against Scotland.

The rapid rise of Conor Bradley that began with his first team breakthrough for Liverpool over the winter has carried over to the international level, where the 20-year-old earned a pair of starts and impressed for Northern Ireland over the March break.

A full ninety at right back in a strong performance in a 1-1 draw against Romania on Friday evening was followed up by a start pushed higher up the pitch on Tuesday night against Scotland in a game that saw the youngster score the only goal to win the night 1-0.

“I’m absolutely buzzing,” Bradley said following the match. “I don’t think I could even dream it would go the way it did. To get a 1-0 win, it’s fantastic, a great night all round. I was just hoping it would go in and I was buzzing when I’ve seen it go in the top corner.

Unfortunately for Bradley, his emergence won’t earn a place at the 2024 Euros, with Northern Ireland having failed to qualify for the summer tournament. However, for the player there will be Nations League matches to look forward to in the autumn.

Before then, too, there will be plenty of chances with Liverpool, with Trent Alexander-Arnold’s injury issues and last night’s blow to Andy Robertson ensuring he will be key to the Reds’ chances as they push for Premier League and Europa League glory.

With one year to run on his contract, Juventus attacker Federico Chiesa is once again being linked with a Liverpool transfer.

For the past few seasons, Juventus and Italy attacker Federico Chiesa has regularly been linked with a move to England, with Liverpool regularly talked up as an option for the 26-year-old alongside the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea.

Based on the chatter during the March international break, summer 2024 is going to offer more of the same on the Chiesa front, with the likes of Fichajes this week claiming that the Reds are eying up a move for the player as his contract starts to run down.

Their main competitors for his signature this time around are said to be United, and whether or not he heads to one of the historic northern rivals there is good reason to believe that this might be the summer that sees Chiesa move on from Juventus.

That’s because his contract is set to expire in 2025, making this offseason the last good chance for the Serie A club to cash in if a new deal isn’t on the cards—and at least as the rumours have it, the player and club are currently at an impasse.

However, the reason for the impasse is said to be that Juventus are hesitant to pay top dollar for a player they have growing injury concerns over given Chiesa has missed around 80 games due to various injuries over the past three seasons.

It’s a worrying record—even more so if his current club are stalling over a new contract due to it. However, between that and his contract status, it could mean that on the flip side he could be had for as little as €40-45M according to the rumours.

From a talent standpoint, and depending on whether Liverpool actually end up needing an attacker this summer, that could represent exceptional value. That would depend heavily, though, on whether there’s any real hope of him ever staying fit.

Injuries will continue until morale improves.

For the second time this season, Liverpool left back Andy Robertson has suffered an injury while on duty with Scotland, with the national team captain leaving the pitch with an ankle injury 37 minutes into their friendly against Northern Ireland.

Previously, Robertson missed a significant portion of the 2023-24 season as the result of a dislocated shoulder suffered against Spain in Euro qualifiers early in October that kept him out until the end of January in the new year.

For a player without a significant injury history, it’s a significant blow—and also a blow to Liverpool’s hopes in the Premier League and Europa League—and while the hopes will be that the injury is minor, needing to leave the pitch in the first half is concerning.

Even more so, Robertson looked in clear pain as he was helped off the pitch by the physios after a tackle by Northern Ireland and Sunderland right back Trai Hume. If he is out for another extended spell, Joe Gomez will again be asked to step up.

Meanwhile on the other side of the pitch, Liverpool right back Conor Bradley put in a starring performance while pushed up the pitch and into midfield, scoring the game’s opening goal shortly before Robertson’s departure.

Fans can vote on which of the 15 shortlisted players, including Fowler, will join the Premier League’s hall of fame. Michael Owen is also nominated.

Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler could be set to join Steven Gerrard in the Premier League Hall of Fame, with the striker on the 15-name shortlist to be inducted in the 2024 class and voting open to fans over the next month.

One of the best finishers Liverpool and English football has ever seen, the Toxteth-born forward grew up at the club’s academy before making his breakthrough to the first team in 1993, going on to score 183 goals in 369 Liverpool appearances for the Reds.

All told, Fowler scored 254 goals in 590 total appearances in a career that spanned 19 seasons, including spells with Leeds United and Manchester City. Fowler also earned 26 England caps.

Another former Liverpool striker, Michael Owen, is also on the shortlist. Following eight seasons in Red that saw him score 158 goals in 297 appearances, Owen refused to extend his contract and pushed for a move to Real Madrid. That move ended in disappointment and he returned to England to play for Newcastle United and Manchester United.

If either—or both—make the cut, they would join Steven Gerrard in the Hall of Fame, with the former Liverpool captain amongst the first eight inductees in 2021. To date, Gerrard is Liverpool’s only player inducted.

Fans can cast their vote until Monday, April 8th.

The 18-year-old striker has made four appearances this season and recently signed a new long-term contract.

Having made his senior debut in the League Cup in the autumn, 18-year-old striker Jayden Danns has gone on to make four senior appearances for Liverpool this season including in their League Cup final win over Chelsea and a man of the match performance in the FA Cup against Southampton.

Recently, the young Scouser and son of Guayana international Neil Danns was rewarded for his growing role in the team with a new long-term contract, and this week he opened up about the experience of breaking into the first team at his boyhood club.

“My big goal is to just progress as far as I can go and keep trying to get better,” Danns said. “To keep progressing and trying to score goals and do the best for the team. The hunger’s not gone, it’s only just started. That first taste is just unbelievable so you just want to keep getting and I’m grateful for everything that is coming.

“This is my boyhood club and I’m just grateful to be in this situation. Like I said, the more chances I get the more chances I want to take. But if I don’t get them chances I just want to keep working hard.

“There’s top-class players ahead of you—there’s no fuss about whether you’re in or you’re not. You’re just grateful when you’re in and around it. So the chances that I get, I’ll work as hard as I can and try to take them.”

A slight easing of Liverpool’s winter injury woes has meant fewer chances in recent weeks, but Danns most certainly made the most of the chances that did come his way, and that should keep him in Jürgen Klopp’s mind for the remainder of the season should the attacking need arise.

Having also just turned 18 in January, though, it will be equally important to guard against expecting too much too soon from the youngster—something the club will no doubt be keeping in mind and that hopefully the fans will as well.

“In my mind I am just going to take on what they give me,” Danns added, “and work as hard as I can to try to perfect my tools and be the best player I can be.”

After Sunday’s disappointing result, a European finish appears almost impossible for Liverpool Women.

Heading into the derby against a struggling Everton side and with a European finish still to play for, Liverpool Women were expecting more from Sunday than the nil-nil draw they took home from Goodison Park.

Despite the disappointment, the point was still enough to move them clear of Manchester United and into fourth place, but the general feeling is that the draw represents two points lost rather than one being won.

“We were coming here to take three points, so it’s two dropped,” said captain Niamh Fahey following the match. “But we take a point, we didn’t concede, and we push on through now to next week against Man City.”

On paper at least, City are a far tougher task than Everton. They’re currently level with Chelsea in first, and they’re the side that dispatched United this weekend to allow Liverpool to slide up into fourth place.

Meanwhile, third-place Arsenal also won over the weekend, which stretches the gap to top three and the European places from six points with six games to play to eight points with five games now left to play.

It’s a gap that has likely shifted from unlikely to implausible, but while there are games to play there’s always a chance. Certainly, though, the Reds will need to be better than they were against Everton on Sunday.

“We’re going to have to make sure when we are on top we take our chances,” Fahey added. “There’s no reason we can’t [challenge]. We’ve had a good season. We just need to keep building, keep progressing.”

Incoming sporting director Richard Hughes is set to bring his chief scout with him from Bournemouth.

Following the appointment of Michael Edwards as Liverpool’s new CEO of Football Operations and Richard Hughes as sporting director as the club plan for life after Jürgen Klopp, there’s news of a third backroom arrival at the club.

Widespread reports today have Hughes set to bring chief scout Mark Burchill along with him from Bournemouth in the summer, with the expectation being that the former Scotland striker will join a Liverpool scouting team led by chief scout Barry Hunter and recruitment chief Dave Fallows.

Following a journeyman career that saw him play 236 games for 14 different clubs, Burchill moved into management with Scottish side Livingston for two seasons before changing track and joining Bournemouth’s scouting team in 2017.

Hughes is said to have considered Burchill integral to his team at the south coast club and bringing him to Anfield with him in the summer was a priority, and it appears Bournemouth were amenable to allowing him to join his former boss at his new club.

With six games to play in the FAWSL season, Liverpool are six points off the top three and European qualification.

Liverpool Women visit local rivals Everton on Sunday as Matt Beard’s Reds continue their unexpected push to land a European place with as the 2023-24 FAWSL season enters its final stretch with six games remaining.

Last weekend’s results saw the Reds beat West Ham by a score of 3-1 to go level on points with Manchester United in fourth place, six points off Arsenal and the final European place with six games to play. That gap may in the end prove to be too great, but probably nobody expected Liverpool to be here when the season began.

“Everton raise their game massively for this derby and our form is good,” commented manager Matt Beard of his side’s upcoming challenge. “The pressure is on them because it’s at Goodison. It’s a different pressure when you are playing at your main stadium.

“They only really play the derby at Goodison Park. It’s going to be an interesting challenge. They’ve got a few injury problems, but they’ve still got a very good squad and I think they have been a bit unlucky with results.”

After consistently being the stronger side on Merseyside in recent seasons, Everton find themselves not just closer to the bottom of the table than the top this year but closer to the drop than they are to their local rivals.

The Blues, though, should be safe with an eight point cushion to last place Bristol and just the six games left in the season. Still, being eight points off last while they trail Liverpool by 14 points and are a full 26 behind leaders Chelsea isn’t where Everton want to be.

That’s not Liverpool’s problem on Sunday, though—all Beard and his Reds will care about is earning another three points and, just maybe, closing the gap on the league’s top three and with it keeping the possibility of a European finish alive.

“With Arsenal losing, our victory got us a little bit closer to them,” Beard added. “We just want to finish as high up the league table as we can. We are pleased with where we are and we’ve just got to make sure we carry on doing the right things.”
