But who can fill the Lovren-sized hole in our hearts?

Add this to the pile of Dejan Lovren-sized defensive plugs. The ex-Liverpool defender has finally moved on from the club and recently linked up with FC Zenit St Petersburg. That has opened the rumour door wide to predict the Croatian’s replacement.

This most recent rumour I’ve read has Liverpool offering a bid to Spain’s Real Betis for defender Aissa Mandi. The La Liga side have a release clause set for €30M on Mandi but COPE are suggesting Betis could be persuaded to take a much lower fee due to Mandi being in the final year of his contract.

As per the rumour, Liverpool have tabled a fee of €10M. So very much lower.

Aissa Mandi is 28-years-old, nearly 29. I don’t know anything about him but what he’s got is probably what he’s going to have for the most part.

Bringing in a player in this age group might signal Klopp and the team are optimistic about Sepp van den Berg’s progression to the match day squad in a season or two. Sepp is currently the age of an 18-year-old cheese.

Anyway, whoever the eventual replacement is for Dejan Lovren, I got a feeling it probably won’t be this guy, Mandi. I do hope it’s somebody and not just Fabinho and the kids filling in, but so say we all.

Hendo tremendo.

The short list of candidates for the Football Writers’ Association’s Player of the Year award included a lot of exceptional players, most of them from Liverpool. Kevin DeBruyne and Marcus Rashford never had a chance against Virgil Van Dijk, Sadio Mané, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Alisson. But those debates needn’t have mattered because also on that list was Jordan Henderson.

On top of Hendo performing at a world class level and totally deserving being named Player of the Year, there’s perhaps no other player who has earned this moment in the sun more than Liverpool’s captain.

Typically, Henderson accepted the award while thanking and praising his teammates and coaching staff.

“As grateful as I am I don’t feel like I can accept this on my own,” said Henderson. “I don’t feel like anything I’ve achieved this season or in fact during my whole career has been done on my own. I owe a lot to so many different people – but none more so than my current teammates – who have just been incredible and deserve this every bit as much as I do.

“We’ve only achieved what we’ve achieved because every single member of our squad has been brilliant. And not just in matches. Not just in producing the moments that make the headlines and the back pages but every day in training.

“The players who’ve started the most games for us this season have been as good as they have been because of our culture and our environment at Melwood. No one individual is responsible for that – it’s a collective effort and that’s how I view accepting this honour.

“I accept it on behalf of this whole squad, because without them I’m not in a position to be receiving this honour. These lads have made me a better player – a better leader and a better person.

“If anything I hope those who voted for me did so partly to recognise the entire team’s contribution.

“Individual awards are nice and they are special and I will cherish this one. But an individual award without the collective achievement wouldn’t mean anywhere as much to me – if anything at all.”

Henderson emerged so effortlessly as a leader once Jürgen Klopp took charge at Liverpool. The captain has always been a better player than many wanted to admit but he’s become a great player working with Klopp. All the accolades to him. All the accolades to the team and staff. What a ride it’s been.

Sole survivor of Liverpool’s 2011 Transfer DebacleFest

Jordan Henderson is thirty-years-old. He’s just won his and Liverpool’s first ever Premier League trophy. We’ve watched nearly Henderson’s whole career happen at Liverpool. He arrived from Sunderland in 2011, part of a less than stellar player recruitment plan led by the majestic Damion Comolli. King Kenny was once photographed alongside Henderson and other incomings Charlie Adam, Stewart Downing, and that goalkeeper Doni. It’s not a great memory.

Many players have come and gone from Melwood over the last decade. Even Henderson was infamously offered to Fulham by Brendan Rodgers. But the captain stuck around, fought for his place, worked hard to fulfill his dreams. He, of course, eventually, methodically, removed the weight of Steven Gerrard’s prestige and became a bonafide captain in his own right.

It’s been a pleasure watching Henderson grow into the influential presence he his now, both on and off the pitch. Watching him lift trophies is pure joy.

“The Premier League has been a dream of mine since I was a kid and that was one of the reasons why I wanted to come to Liverpool – you want to win trophies and the expectations are so high,” said Henderson.

“But when you come as a young player, it’s so difficult. It’s been a process, a journey and it hasn’t happened overnight.

“Over the past five years since the gaffer came in, it’s been a process, a journey and every single player has been a part of that journey. To finish the season off like this has been really special.

“We can enjoy tonight but, after this, next season is going to be a big challenge for us. I thought tonight we showed the mentality again to come and perform like we did, and get the result we did.”

Then, leaning into that famous team togetherness, Henderson added:

“We’re always there together for each other, it’s a really close group – as you can see – and that’s off the field and on the field.

“It makes a massive difference and it’s another thing the gaffer has brought since he’s come in: that togetherness in the dressing room. It has made a really big difference on the pitch.”

Liverpool are Premier League champions. Sunglasses. Deal with it.

Winning the Premier League for the first time will be a colossal moment in Liverpool history no matter how far into the future you go. The club has been at it for decades, coming up just short on a number of occasions.

Manager’s have come and gone from Melwood, wishing they’d been the one to return Liverpool to the pinnacle of football. Graeme Souness, Roy Evans, Gérard Houllier, Rafa Benítez, and Brendan Rodgers all had the highest of hopes for winning the league.

There was also Roy Hodgson. I don’t know what Roy was thinking but he didn’t think he was going to win the league. He thought Hodgeball was good. And Kenny’s appointment was more of a special time than a title challenge.

Then Jürgen Klopp accepted the job in 2015 and it seemed like something fun might start brewing again. Liverpool have gone from strength to strength with Klopp in charge. The transfer committee isn’t a whiskey tornado anymore. The togetherness preached by the manager and players is not fabricated for the cameras. There’s real unity in the squad and it’s been creating a lot of winning over the last few seasons.

Joël Matip recently mused on the joyful release of winning the Premier League with Liverpool and spoke highly of Klopp and the efforts the manager puts into this football team.

“I can imagine how liberating it was for him, too,” said Matip. “Everyone can imagine how exhausting so much pressure is for the body and the mind. That is not always easy.

“He also carries a heavy load and protects us from this load from the outside. Internally, he discusses things very clearly, but as I said, he protects us from the outside. We know that. As a player, you like to jump into the breach for such a coach.”

Then, not at all finished praising his manager, Joël kept talking.

“He is known for always making a casual statement but when it comes to work and the team, he is very clear,” Matip said.

“He has his ideas and always tries to get them into the mind of every player. He always tells us how important the team is and how important it is that we stick together.

“He knows that we have quality, but that we can only achieve something if we pull together. He has an incredibly good way of motivating us and arousing the emotions within us.”

Klopp In.

That’s why we call him The Century Usherer.

In 104 appearances for Liverpool, Mohamed Salah has 100 goal involvements to his name. Mo joins an elite group of three other Reds who have achieved the same feat: Michael Owen, Robbie Fowler and Steven Gerrard.

Jürgen Klopp was asked about Salah’s production stats at Friday’s pre-Burnley press conference and wasted no time in praising all of his star forwards.

“Didn’t we say something similar about Sadio a few days ago? It’s incredible. We would not be where we are if these boys did not perform on this consistent high level and Mo, of course, come on, his numbers are crazy, absolutely crazy,” said Klopp.

“He’s involved in 100 [Premier League] goals since he is here, 73 [goals], 27 [assists]. Just outstanding numbers, world-class numbers. Nobody should be surprised any more because the boys show that week in and week out [for] a while already.

“We know that it’s special but there’s a lot of work and you can only score if you invest that in each game, if you are in the right positions and do the right thing, and that’s what the boys were always ready to do and what they have to do still. And then it will continue. Long may it continue, that would be great.”

Salah could have more goal involvement opportunities against Burnley but I wouldn’t mind the Egyptian starting on the bench. Same for Roberto Firmino. Bring Mo and Bobby on in the second half at Anfield if necessary but otherwise keep them fresh for Arsenal. And then Chelsea.

Sadio spent most the match at Brighton on the sidelines so he should be good to go again. I know the Origi experiment didn’t pan out against Aston Villa but Origi works in mysterious ways. He could be the difference on Saturday. That’s part of his charm.

Liverpool vs. Burnley

| Saturday, July 11th |
Premier League | Anfield
3:00PM BST / 10:00AM EST

Burnley’s goalkeeper Nick Pope is the current Golden Glove leader with 14 clean sheets this season. Alisson is one point behind. Sean Dyche fields a robust team that is difficult to break down and Burnley will show up at Anfield on Saturday with a plan to disrupt Liverpool’s slick attacking play and force a hard-nosed battle for 90 minutes.

Since losing 5-0 against Manchester City on June 22, Burnley were blessed with a more palatable run of fixtures that saw them pick up points from Watford, Crystal Palace, Sheffield United and West Ham. Pope recorded 3 clean sheets along the way. They’re a team playing with some confidence.

With Chris Wood injured, Jay Rodriguez has become Burnley’s forward making things happen, scoring two and providing an assist over the team’s previous 4 games.

I don’t think Virgil van Dijk will have too much trouble with Burnley’s attack but with Joe Gomez looking shaky in recent performances I fear Klopp might throw in a newly-recovered Dejan Lovren into the back line. That makes me a little nervous.

It’s Naby Keita or James Milner for me in the midfield alongside Fabinho and Gini Wijnaldum, who both started the reverse fixture back in August.

The manager’s defensive choices are up in the air. Andy Robertson is likely to return to his starting role at left-back but it’s entirely possible that Milner could be called into back line action again. Fabinho could drop in as centre-back with Virgil. Neco might be given more minutes but this time in his preferred right back position, with Trent making way. As I mentioned above, there could be some Lovrening in our future.

The Liverpool captain will miss the rest of this season due to a knee injury at Brighton.

That thwack on Jordan Henderson’s knee late in the second half at Brighton & Hove Albion has officially been confirmed as the captain’s season ender. Liverpool will have to brave the remaining matches without Hendo screaming at everyone all the time, Jürgen Klopp revealed during his pre-Burnley press conference.

“Hendo is actually really the best possible of all the bad news,” said Klopp. “It is a knee injury, but no surgery needed.

“He will not play anymore in the latter stage of this season but I am pretty positive he will start with us the new season.

“We were all concerned in the moment we saw him in going down and when he left the pitch and stuff like this.

“Yesterday when we got the news, it was a big relief for all of us. It is not cool, obviously, but it is the best we could get.

“Hendo will be back; he is a quick healer and he will be back soon.”

Klopp does have plenty of excellent options in his squad to collect Henderson’s minutes. Fabinho and Gini Wijnaldum could see a majority of Liverpool’s midfield. But Naby Keita is bounding into form through this restart. Curtis Jones is always rising in the manager’s mind. And Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and James Milner are both in good shape, as well.

The captain has often proven himself critical to Klopp’s midfield. When he sits out, things don’t always run smoothly for the team on the pitch. Again, his screaming is an ever-present beacon. So, Peter Moore should be pumping recordings of Hendo screaming into Anfield for all of our remaining home fixtures. For the away ones, maybe some sort of bluetooth situation. Somebody let Peter know.

The manager’s been online all day looking for cool trophies.

When the Premier League winners’ medals are eventually passed out to the Liverpool squad, Jürgen Klopp intends that every player on his team gets something shiny.

According to Big Rules, a player must play in five matches over the season to be eligible to receive a medal, but a few of the manager’s youngsters currently fall short of that target.

Harvey Elliott, Curtis Jones, and Neco Williams would each have to pick up three appearances over the remaining six games to qualify for an official award.

Klopp insisted on Friday that the boys wouldn’t be shoehorned into action just to make up the numbers. He said Premier League matches wouldn’t be “handed out like sweets.”

But the manager also sounds determined to honor his entire squad regardless of the five match rule. Honestly, I think Klopp might have his own trophy guy.

“People don’t understand how important a squad is to win a championship. If you play no game you should get a medal.

“If you are a goalkeeper and you don’t play, you should get a medal because you train five million times for a year and if you don’t train at the highest level you have no chance to win a championship.

“So someone decides they need five games to win a medal? These boys will get a medal 100 per cent if I have to produce it by myself.

“They can have my medal but it is not really the right rule. What is that?

“We have to win football games and it is not about that. We cannot just give the appearances away here and there.

“But if they deserve a medal they will get a medal, if not from the Premier League then from me.”

It’s just a flesh wound.

At his pre-Aston Villa press conference, Jürgen Klopp was bombarded with questions over Liverpool’s desire after losing to Manchester City so heavily on Thursday. Barely a journalist on the call even brought up Villa.

Each new faceless voice essentially asked the manager to repeat what he had already said multiple times about his team’s resolve and the coaching staff’s determination to keep the players in top form for the remaining games. Klopp handled it well, though, only obviously tempering emotion after he was asked to overanalyse something Jordan Henderson said.

The manager was clearly frustrated with Liverpool’s result immediately following the match but he said that once he hit the training ground on Friday morning, the anger fog had lifted.

“I was not in a good mood after the game,” said Klopp. “I was not in a really good mood when I went to bed. I was not in a really good mood when I woke up. And then I arrived at Melwood and I was in a really good mood and I asked myself, ‘Why?’ Because here we change things.

“So, the mood is okay. When you lose a game it feels like it feels. We didn’t take it that easy last night but meanwhile I’ve had a little more time to think about the game.

“The problem with post-match interviews is that you go inside, have a minute, and then go outside and have all the interviews and you still have all the impressions of the game.

“This game last night, we lost in key moments. In these key moments City were better than us. Apart from that, we were good.

“We had more chances than we had when we won 3-1 at home but we gave 4 goals away. And then you cannot win against City.

“So that’s two things, one is the feeling and the other is the facts. Both are important and we will use both.”

Mohamed Salah wants to keep on doing it for the Reds.

As you know, Liverpool’s players are all best friends and sleep in a clubhouse at Melwood. It’s been the secret to Jürgen Klopp’s success. But it’s not so secret anymore. Now that Liverpool have won the Champions League and the Premier League and the Super Cup and the Club World Cup, other clubs are going to hear more and more about Melwood’s player clubhouse and the idea will gain popularity.

We’re going to be reading a lot more about these teams of best friends in future seasons.

Recently, Mohamed Salah spoke with beIN Sports about the togetherness amongst the Liverpool squad and what the bond the players share means to him personally. It’s powerful stuff.

“We should make a great use of this generation, as we have good chemistry between us and you can find harmony and everyone knows what to do and where to find our team-mates,” said Salah.

“Staying at our peak is not something easy but we’ll play hard to keep winning trophies. It’s impossible for me to say that I have enough trophies and I reached my maximum. I will continue to do my best to make next year better than the one before.

“I’m very happy. I can’t describe my feelings after we won the league after 30 years. I can see people’s joy and this is so important for all of us. I enjoy the atmosphere here. I love this place and I hope to stay for a long time.”

Until player clubhouses and best friend teams become the norm in football, it’s difficult to see Salah moving on from Liverpool. What Klopp has created on Merseyside renders anything else a step back.
