AFCON and AFC Asian Cup Absences Expected for Arsenal Matches

The only team not affected by the international cups seems to be Manchester City

Liverpool FC’s Mohamed Salah and Wataru Endō signed off in style in their last game before leaving for their respective international tournaments, with a dominating 4-2 win against Newcastle United.

With Egypt and Japan amongst the favourites to win, both players could be away until 10 February (AFC Asian Cup final) and 12 February (AFCON Final), respectively. It’s a big loss since Mo Salah is well, Mo Salah, and Endō has played a huge part in December and looks to have found his feet in the team.

One of Liverpool’s opponents to be affected by the tournaments is Arsenal, who we face in FA Cup competition this Sunday, and then again at the tail end of the period on 5 February.

Coincidentally, they also have an Egyptian and Japanese player, with Mohamed Elneny and Takehiro Tomiyasu both called up for their squads. While Elneny is a fringe squad player at this point, Tomiyasu is one of the first names Arteta calls upon from the bench or for rotation, and his absence will add some further strain to Arsenal’s squad, with Oleksandr Zinchenko nursing a calf injury as of late.

And, of course, Manchester City is the only club with no call-ups for AFCON and the AFC Cup. Hahahahaha. Up the New Year Reds.
