England’s World Cup Qualifying got going again this week with a thrashing 4-0 victory over Hungary, their first competitive fixture after their defeat to Italy in the EUROs. With their first two matches of this international window being against Hungary and Andorra, it’s given Gareth Southgate an opportunity to tinker with his squad’s tactics. That’s exactly what he plans on doing on Sunday when England face Andorra.

According to The Telegraph, Southgate is going to start Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold in a midfield role on Sunday. Mike McGrath reports that Trent has been training as a midfielder during this England camp, and will either play as a right sided central midfielder in a 4-3-3 or a right midfielder in other formations. Of course, these are not positions that the right back plays when he plays with his club.

England is stocked at the right fullback position so this doesn’t necessarily come as a surprise to anyone that Trent would be played out of position. Southgate doesn’t view him as his first choice rightback and seemingly prefers other players there. It will be interesting to see how Trent gets on.
