Don’t worry, silly season is almost over, but it’s going to get sillier before the end in five days.
(I know, I thought the transfer window closed on Friday but I guess not).
The rest of the football world seems to be going insane with transfers, like bringing Cristiano Ronaldo to Manchester City but letting Raheem Sterling leave, letting Pierre Emerick Aubameyang leave Arsenal, and of course the potential departure of Kylian Mbappé (and not to us). Let’s add a little more silliness to the mix.
Tony Banks at The Express is reporting that Liverpool have made an official inquiry to the purchase of Yves Bissouma from Brighton & Hove Albion. Of course, we all know The Express isn’t exactly the most reliable of sources, but this rumour has been around all summer from various other sources including Fabrizio Romano and Duncan Castles - other reporters who have their own dubious records when it comes to Liverpool transfers.
Let’s just imagine for a minute though.
Liverpool have “reportedly” been looking for a replacement for Georginio Wijnaldum after his departure for Paris Saint-Germain at the end of his contract, and Bissouma would seem to fit the bill. 24 years old and instrumental to Graham Potter’s plans at Brighton since his arrival in 2018, he’s allegedly been on Klopp’s radar for a long time.
Sure, right, that all sounds plausible.
It’s also easy at this point to find midfielders that look like they would fit into Klopp’s plans and systems, see a hole that needs to be filled, and do the math yourself. Of course we’d probably be looking at Bissouma for all of the reasons mentioned above. Brighton also are reportedly asking around £40 million for the midfielder, as he would require replacing himself, and who knows if Liverpool even want to spend that kind of money after making sure that some of our most important players are locked down for at least the next couple years.
Ibrahim Konaté remains Liverpool’s only signing of the summer, though, and Klopp had hinted that another signing might still happen before the window closes on midnight August 31st.
Until someone more reliable reports that Bissouma is actually happening, that a bid has been agreed upon, and even if there’s a #LiverpoolLean moment, we’ll put this into the “just rumours for now” pile.
