Jamie Carragher is a Liverpool legend, so when he speaks about the current affairs of the team, fans tend to listen. With just two weeks to go until Liverpool start their 2021-22 Premier League campaign at recently promoted Norwich City, Jamie has certain concerns about where Liverpool’s squad is at currently.
“I think in terms of numbers it’s not a problem, I think it is in terms of quality,” Carragher said. “If we didn’t bring in another addition it may be difficult to knock Man City off the top, and let’s not forget Chelsea, the European champions, and Manchester United, who have had a great window with (Raphael) Varane and (Jadon) Sancho.”
Up until this point in the transfer window, Liverpool have signed French centerback Ibrahima Konaté from RB Leipzig for approximately £36 million. The bulk of the reporting this summer has said that Liverpool are focused on getting some of the squad players off the books before they add any additions.
“I’d like to see someone who could get goals,” Carragher continues, “whether that’s from midfield or part of the front three.
“I am just wary a little bit with Liverpool, after last season going into this season, as to whether there are enough goals in the team for them to go and win the title.”
Despite everything that happened last season for Liverpool, they still managed to finish 3rd. They also scored the 3rd most goals in the Premier League, behind both Manchester clubs and tied with Leicester City and Tottenham. However, the 68 goals scored in the 2020-21 season was a significant drop off from their title winning season of 2019-20, where they managed to score 85 goals.
Carragher would go on to opine about where Liverpool can find answers within the squad.
“But I am expecting a big season from (Sadio) Mane. He didn’t have his best season but he’s looking really sharp in pre-season, hopefully he can be the guy who can plug that gap in terms of goals.”
